TIKTOK
In 2020, joined TikTok as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of Gen Z and their trends. As I did so, I became more and more interested in participating in them. I saw that
"art trends" would form where people would participate by using the audio of an original poster (typically a tutorial or drawing prompt). I leveraged my art skills and created my own trend: creating art series of my own and challenging my followers to participate in them. I also noticed that most art contents didn't typically garner many views, so I made several series that intrigued viewers and made them want to tune in to the next video. Within 3 weeks I reached 100k followers and currently, my highest-viewed TikTok sits at over 10 million views.
The funny thing is, I never really wanted to be famous on social media. I was fascinated by studying target markets and finding new, unique, and genuine ways of connecting with them. Once I hit 200K followers I felt I'd accomplished my mission and took a step back from TikTok.

WHAT DID I LEARN?
A few things, actually. There are many communities on TikTok and to be successful, you need to find your niche. But to be really successful, you have to appeal outside your niche. I noticed when I started posting my art TikToks that there are very very few extremely successful artists on the app. So I did more than make art... I made TikToks that would appeal to people who really aren't even interested in art. By making art series, people followed along to see where it went. I also used trending songs. I noticed too that if I narrate and feature myself more prominently, the TikToks performed better. Things like helpful advice also tended to appeal more to artists and were shared much more frequently than my other TikToks. And if I challenged my viewers guess what I was painting or ask them a question, comments increased drastically.

TLDR; I observed trends within the app, my community, and my followers,
to appeal to users of the app, really understand them, and connect with them.
